Christine Murphy – Watercolour Artist

My passion for art started in my school days. I had won the Year 12 School Art Prize, and my pieces travelled the State in the Schools Art Exhibition. After an 18-year break, marrying, working as a nurse,, and raising two daughters I began learning watercolours. In 2000 I started  watercolour classes with Ros Dickenson in Birdwood, and quickly developed my preferred style.   I also attended master classes with the late Terry Lewitzka (for whom I sat for a portrait), David Taylor, Arthur Phillips, and 3 days with Joseph Zbukvic.

I have been living in Birdwood in the beautiful Adelaide Hills since 1988. This is inspiring in itself. I have been privileged to have travelled extensively within Australia and overseas and am continually inspired by what I see.  Memorabilia items have me thinking of past generations as I paint. Overseas destinations have added to an extensive subject range; old vehicles, flora, fauna, landscapes, character caravans, to name a few. Some paintings are detailed & realistic, through to fun modern pieces.  Pen and watercolour, and ‘Plein Air’ pieces also feature in my repertoire.

My studio is tucked away in the back yard and was purpose built by husband Michael, for the collective use of painting, teaching Watercolour classes (Since 2005) and a Custom Picture Framing Workshop, “Murphy Framing”.

Making cards and prints of my artwork allows me to continue enjoying a painting after it has been sold and to share some of my favourite pieces, including those staying in my own personal collection.

I also run watercolour classes on Wednesday mornings and afternoons. These are small friendly groups where you can work at your own pace.  Beginners are most welcome.
We also have vast framing experience working with: works on paper, needle art (using embroiderers guild techniques), 3D items and repairs.
Mat boards can also be cut to size for your existing frames as well as a range of glazing options. We also use a ceiling mounted camera linked to a screen which allows a visualisation of what a finished frame might look like with your artwork.
